we talked about the two modes of documentary which is the expository and the poetic mode.

first of all, we are going to be talking about the expository documentary mode which is a more rhetorical and argumentative frame than an aesthetic or a poetic one. The expository mode addresses the viewer directly with the title and the voices that shows a form of perspective , advance and argument or recount a form of history.

The speaker in a documentary is heard but never seen or a voice of authority commentary is also used( they are also heard but never seen). The expository documentary also rely on informing by the use of spoken word.

The editing phase: it serves less to establish a rhythm or formal pattern as it happens in poetic mode. The expository mode also emphasises more on the impression of objectivity and a well supported argument.

POETIC MODE

This emphasises more on visual, tonal or rhythmic qualities, passages and formal organisation. This is an indirect way of making people grasp the inner meaning behind all aspects of life. It is also a way of expressing reality using audio visual or descriptive passages.

• A documentary according to John Grierson is the creative treatment of actuality. He said that if you have used your creativity to organise prices of recorded reality into a narrative , then you have produced a documentary. It is as a result of a meaningful organised story.

2.) Key characteristics of a documentary?

• It must have engaging characters, it must have a narrative tension and it must also have something to say about human condition.

3.) What things distinguish it from other forms of non-fiction?

• Documentaries are actual stories.

4.) What are some of the things that successful documentaries do?

• They warn , report, explain,celebrate,remember,prophesy and liberate.

5.) What is a good definition of a podcast?

• A podcast is a digital audio media that is used in making different episodes of audio broadcast on the internet.
